How we got started
A little introduction about us as a family and what we dop here on the farmstead. We had 8 kiddos ranging from 16 to almost 2 months old. We moved out into the country last June after we got tired of the traffic and having neighbors right outside our windows. We moved from just shy of half an acre to 9.4 acres. The property we bought was fully fenced in with a workshop and house already here. It had a massive chicken coop with small hay barn attached to it. We started off with our chickens we brought from our previous home. We have since added ducks, turkeys, geese, and of course more chickens. We have also looked into a sustainable meat source outside of poultry. We have been buying half a cow custom cut every 6 months from a local family. While that's great and all we had to see what other options there are for raising our own meat. We looked at raising our own cattle, but prices are super inflated right now and would cost a fortune to get a small herd established. We then looked at sheep. Much more affordable, can rotationally graze with little feed input, and grow out to butcher weight quickly. We bought our first few sheep, sent them to the butcher to make sure the kids would eat it and it was something we liked. Fast forward 3 months and we now have around 25 sheep consisting of Katahdin, St. Croix, Dorper, and Gulf Coast Native mixed sheep. This will be the main source for income on the farm (besides my regular job) and food source for us. I'll talk about the fruit trees and berries we have in the next post.
