I have a new client coming in Friday for a root retouch. She mentioned she used a high-lift red the last time she colored her hair. Since I already have the Matrix Red Booster on hand, I wanted to review some formulation details for it. My other thought is Schwarzkopf Igora Royal Fashion Lights (L-88 or L-89), depending on the tone of red she's aiming for. I'm doing a consultation with her tomorrow to evaluate her hair in person and to further discuss the options.

Can we talk about a question that keeps coming up in our community? 👀 "Why do my blondes come out PURPLE after I tone?" Listen, the purple toner isn't the villain. When a blonde goes lavender, it's almost always one of these 4 things: 1️⃣ The hair was lighter than the toner was made for. The paler the blonde, the less yellow there is to cancel, so that violet has nowhere to go but onto the hair. 2️⃣ The hair is porous. Lightened hair soaks up pigment like a sponge, and on textured hair the ends are usually the most porous. That's why the root looks perfect and the ends go purple. 3️⃣ It sat too long. Toner keeps depositing the whole time it's on, and very light, very porous hair can go from perfect to purple fast. You can't set a timer and walk away. 4️⃣ It wasn't mixed right. Eyeballing your toner and developer throws off the ratio, and too much color in the bowl gives you a darker, heavier deposit than you planned. Weigh it. Every time. 🎥 Watch the video below.
