“Choose Joy as My Strength”
“Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” — Nehemiah 8:10 (KJV)
Kingdom Lesson
One of Satan's greatest objectives is not merely to make God's people sin—it is to rob them of their joy. He understands something many believers overlook: a discouraged Christian becomes a weakened Christian. A joyless parent loses patience. A joyless entrepreneur loses creativity. A joyless business owner loses vision. A joyless pastor eventually loses compassion. Long before the enemy attacks your assignment, he often attacks your joy because the joy of the Lord is your strength.
One of the greatest misunderstandings among believers is confusing joy with happiness. They are not the same. Happiness depends upon what is happening. It rises and falls with circumstances. Good news brings happiness. Success brings happiness. Favorable conditions bring happiness. But happiness is temporary because circumstances constantly change.
Joy is entirely different.
Joy is rooted in the unchanging character of God. It is anchored in His promises, His presence, and His faithfulness. Joy does not deny pain; it simply refuses to allow pain to have the final word. A joyful believer may still walk through disappointment, grief, uncertainty, or suffering, yet remain confident because their confidence rests in the Lord rather than their circumstances.
The setting of Nehemiah 8 makes this truth even more remarkable. Israel had returned from captivity. Jerusalem had been devastated. The walls had only recently been rebuilt. As Ezra read the Law, the people began to weep over their failures and how far they had wandered from God. Yet Nehemiah interrupted their sorrow with one of the greatest declarations in Scripture:
"Neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength."
Their strength was not found in rebuilt walls. It was found in a restored relationship with God. Their circumstances had not suddenly become perfect, but they had rediscovered the presence of the One who never changes.
Joy strengthens us in ways few people fully appreciate.
First, joy strengthens the heart. Proverbs 17:22 says, "A merry heart doeth good like a medicine." Joy brings emotional resilience that allows us to carry responsibility without becoming consumed by it.
Second, joy strengthens faith. Discouragement causes us to focus on our problems. Joy lifts our eyes back to God's promises. Joy declares that God is still working even when we cannot yet see what He is doing.
Third, joy strengthens endurance. Hebrews tells us that Jesus, "for the joy that was set before him endured the cross" (Hebrews 12:2). Joy helped Him look beyond present suffering to future victory. Kingdom leaders must learn to do the same. We endure today's challenges because we trust tomorrow's promises.
Fourth, joy strengthens relationships. Families, businesses, ministries, and organizations often reflect the emotional climate of their leaders. Joy creates an atmosphere where people feel encouraged, hopeful, and secure. It breathes life into every environment it enters.
Finally, joy strengthens our witness. The world expects Christians to have joy when life is easy. But when people watch believers walk through storms with unwavering confidence, they begin asking questions. Joy becomes a testimony that Christ is real. It becomes an open door to share the Gospel.
This truth has become deeply personal to me.
I can tell you from nearly six decades of walking with Christ that there have been seasons when I walked very closely with the Lord, and there were seasons when I wandered much farther than I should have. There were times when I did not respond to life's difficulties the way I wish I had. Whatever trial stood before me often became so overwhelming that it consumed my attention. Like Peter looking at the wind instead of Jesus, I allowed circumstances to become larger than my faith.
But something changed as I continued pursuing the Lord.
Jeremiah 29:13 became more than a verse—it became my experience.
“And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart."
The more I pursued Him, the more I discovered something this world cannot explain. I found a peace that circumstances could not produce. I found a joy that success could not create and disappointment could not steal. It did not happen overnight. It grew through years of learning that God is absolutely trustworthy.
Today I can look back over my life with the confidence David expressed:
“I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread." (Psalm 37:25)
Looking back, I can now see God's hand in places where I could not recognize it at the time. I can see His faithfulness during seasons when I questioned His timing. I can see His protection when I thought He had forgotten me. I can see His purpose in situations that once made absolutely no sense.
That is where lasting joy is born.
Joy comes through complete abandonment to God's care. It comes from settling forever that our Father does all things well. It comes from believing that what He has purposed for our lives, He is faithful to bring to pass. It comes from knowing that even when we cannot trace His hand, we can always trust His heart.
The enemy wants you to live from today's circumstances.
God invites you to live from His eternal promises.
One produces fear.
The other produces joy.
Choose joy every morning. Protect it throughout the day. Feed it through worship. Strengthen it through gratitude. Guard it by renewing your mind. Refuse to surrender it to temporary circumstances. Remember, the enemy cannot weaken your assignment if he cannot steal your strength.
And according to God's Word...
"The joy of the LORD is your strength."
Kingdom Quote
"Happiness is based upon circumstances. Joy is based upon Christ. Circumstances change, but Christ never changes. Therefore, the believer's strength never has to change."
Kingdom Prayer
Father, thank You that my strength is not determined by my circumstances but by the joy found in Your presence. Teach me to trust You completely, to rest in Your faithfulness, and to draw my confidence from Your unchanging character instead of my changing circumstances. Guard my heart from discouragement, fear, negativity, and every distraction that seeks to rob me of the joy You have provided.
Help me pursue You with my whole heart until Your peace and joy become the steady foundation of my life. May my family, my leadership, my business, my ministry, and everyone around me see the evidence of Christ through the joy I carry. Let my life testify that You are always faithful, Your promises are always true, and Your joy truly is my strength. In Jesus' name, Amen.
