The Power of Getting Outside Yourself in Recovery
Friends, I want to share something that's been fundamental to my growth since that day I chose recovery on May 8, 2023 - the transformative power of helping others.
There's a stark contrast between the person I was in active addiction and who I am today. Back then, everything was about ME - getting that next fix was all that mattered. I didn't care about my appearance, my home, or the impact of my words and actions on others. The shame was overwhelming - shame about choosing drugs over loved ones, about neglecting basic self-care, about how I lived.
But here's what recovery has taught me: When those feelings of low self-worth creep in, the best medicine is reaching out to help someone else. Last week I helped a friend move, and that simple act of service turned into meaningful conversations about recovery and living a wholesome life we can be proud of.
Practical Ways to Get Outside Yourself:
  • Help someone with daily tasks (moving, transportation, errands)
  • Make check-in calls to fellow recovery warriors
  • Share your experience to help others avoid pitfalls
  • Volunteer at local recovery meetings
  • Offer a listening ear without judgment
  • Pass on resources that have helped you
Today, my phone calls aren't about what I need - they're about checking if YOU have what you need. Do you have food? Transportation? Someone to talk to?
This shift from self-centered to others-centered living is nothing short of miraculous. Even without employment right now, I find purpose in serving others. When we step outside our own struggles to help another person, something amazing happens - not only do we lift them up, but we heal ourselves in the process.
Remember: Your higher power and the universe have your back when you focus on being of service. It's not about perfection; it's about progress and purpose.
Today's Challenge: Reach out to someone in your recovery network. Ask how they're doing. Offer help if you can. Watch how it transforms both your days.
Keep Going, Warriors! 💪
