No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. 1 Corinthians 10:13 (NIV)
This verse is commonly misquoted as saying that God will NOT give you more than you can HANDLE. There are a few things wrong with this interpretation.
- The verse is completely out of context. When read in full context, we get the verse's real meaning.
- Often, the full verse is not quoted.
- The word "handle" is inserted where "temptation" appears.
God most definitely will give us more than we can handle. It is in the times that we are not able to handle things on our own that we learn to turn and rely on him. Think about this: if we could handle everything, would we even need God? The answer is no, we would not.
Now temptation is another story. In situations where things are tempting us to the point that we cannot handle them anymore, God will give us an out. He often will not make that out crystal clear to us. We have to be looking for that out. When temptation appears, and it will, go to your Father in prayer. He will show you the way out of that temptation.
I hope this clears up this common misconception of this verse.
