Violinists often stick around the music of Django and Grappelli. This makes sense of course, it’s where we feel wanted. I joke here but it’s sort of true.
But I think it’s important, if we are going to play jazz in any form that we check out something from outside of this and study the lineage of the music to some degree. Django and Stephane did this of course, they created their own “European” sound but it was informed by the music that was happening in America at the time
Working on the sound of the blues and understanding the blues form is an essential part of this.
I cover the blues as a whole in my “jazz violin foundations” course, as well as looking into a “jazz blues” in the 10 tunes you must know course. Until Wednesday you can get them both together in the classroom for one price.
