Jazz Vocalist Harvey Thompson's Connection to Cheryl Daniels
March 25, 2026 (Tokyo, Japan) - The following is a section from Harvey Thompson's coming biography concerning his connection to professional bowler and singer Cheryl Daniels: "Around this time Harvey met another bright light who he crossed bowling paths with, Cheryl Daniels. Daniels was a gifted bowler and accomplished songwriter and R&B singer who was active on the city's music and bowling scenes. Cheryl had earned a reputation as one of Detroit's standout bowlers, yet her passion for music was just as strong. The two quickly struck up a friendship and made a simple exchange. She would help Harvey improve his bowling, and he would coach her in singing. They shared bowling tips for voice lessons. They even co-wrote a song for the PBA tour called "That's Part of Life On the PBA Tour." It was an arrangement borne out of mutual respect and shared artistry, blending Detroit's twin traditions of rhythm and competitive precision that both bowling and jazz demanded. They both delivered. In bowling, Cheryl Daniels broke racial and gender barriers, becoming one of the top Black women professionals on the PWBA Tour. She was the first African-American woman to win the United States Women's Open in 1995. She was later inducted into several halls of fame, including the USBC and the PWBA Hall of Fame. She won ten titles in her professional bowling career, including that prestigious 1995 U.S. Women's Open victory, which is a major on the PWBA Tour."
