How to: Backwash Your Sand Filter
Start by turning off your pool pump to prevent any damage while changing settings. Once the pump is off, move the multiport valve handle to the “Backwash” position, making sure to press it down fully before turning. Turn the pump back on and let it run for two to three minutes, or until the water in the sight glass (or waste line) runs clear. Next, turn the pump off again, then switch the valve to “Rinse.” Run the pump for about thirty seconds to reset the sand bed and flush out any remaining debris. After rinsing, turn the pump off once more and return the valve to the “Filter” position. Restart the pump and check the pressure gauge—it should now read back in its normal range, usually around 10–20 psi.
