Biking in Kits yesterday
I finished up my work day around 2pm yesterday and headed along the Arbutus Greenway to Kitsilano.
I stopped along the 5th Avenue public gardens and chatted with a few locals. I was happy to see my old corner store, Helen's Grocery, at 5th and Yew has been transformed into a Nomad coffee shop.
I used to go to Helen's (as we'd always refer to the store by) on the weekends when I was probably 6 or 7 to return our family pop bottles, pick up a carton (or bag) of milk and sneak a jaw breaker without the shop owner noticing (he always noticed). The kids tried to make a go of the store after their parents passed, but big box retailers made it difficult for the little guys to keep up and it stood vacant for several years.
