Stop starting your reels with 'Hey guys'
Three seconds. That's all you get. That's the window between someone seeing your reel and deciding whether to keep watching or scroll past you forever. And most of you are torching that window with "Hey guys, welcome back" or "So today I wanted to talk about..." You just told the algorithm to bury you. A good hook does ONE of these things: stops the scroll with curiosity, makes a bold claim, gives a specific result, or names a problem your audience already has. That's it. Don't start with "I". Don't start with context. Don't be polite. Bad: "5 tips to grow on Instagram" Good: "I used to make my wife drop me off at Mexican restaurants so I could learn Spanish for Special Forces training" One sounds like a Pinterest infographic. The other sounds like a person you actually want to listen to. Go pull up your last 10 reels right now. Read the first 3 seconds out loud. If you wouldn't stop scrolling for it β€” rewrite it. Today. Not Monday. Not after you "research more." Today. Drop your niche below and I'll give you 3 hook templates that actually work for it.
Your hook is killing your reach
Pulled up a real estate agent's reel last night. 84 views. She'd posted 47 of them. The opener: "Hey guys, so today I wanted to talk about three tips for first-time home buyers." Dead before it started. Here's what's actually happening. Instagram shows your reel to a couple hundred randoms first. You get about 1.5 seconds to make them stop. Watch past 3 seconds = algorithm expands you. Scroll past = the reel dies. That's the whole game and most of you are losing it in the first sentence. "Hey guys" is a death sentence. So is "today," "so," or your own name. Nobody knows you yet. Nobody cares. What works: name the pain or the promise in the first 5 words. "You're getting screwed on closing costs and nobody told you." Now I'm watching. Now I need the next sentence. Go pull your last 10 reels right now. Read only the first line out loud. If you'd scroll past it, your audience already did. Drop your worst hook in the comments. I'll tell you why it's not working.
You don't need 100K followers. You need 500 people in your DMs.
Everybody is chasing 100K like it's the magic number that prints money. It's not. Not even close. I know creators with 6K followers making $5K a month. I know creators with 80K followers making fucking nothing. The number means nothing if your audience doesn't trust you and you don't have an offer. Here's the move that actually works under 10K followers. Post content that speaks to ONE specific problem. Not "fitness for everyone." Try "fitness for moms too tired after work to lift." That's a person. They feel seen. They follow you because they think you're reading their mind. CTA at the bottom sends them to your DMs. "Send me the word TIRED and I'll show you the 20-minute workout I do when I have nothing left." When they DM, have an actual conversation. Ask about their life. What's the real problem. Where are they stuck. Don't pitch yet. If there's a fit, make the offer in the DMs. No funnel. No sales page. No 4-paragraph copy block. Just "I can help with that. $X for Y. Want in?" George Heinrich landed a $3,600/month client from ONE Instagram Story Q&A doing this. Joseph recouped $4K in affiliate sales just by talking to people. You don't need a funnel. You need 30 real conversations a week. Drop a πŸ™‹ in the comments if you want me to break down the exact opening DM I'd send.
