New Years Reflections and Resolutions
The New Year is officially upon us. And magically it coincides with a new moon on 12/30 (New Moons = 'No' Moon which is great for intention setting as it it marks the conclusion of the last lunar cycle and the beginning of the next one).
If you're like nearly everyone else that sets and forgets new years resolutions, and you feel defeated to the point of not even wanting to set any resolutions this year, then join the club.
Over time I've come to change the way I think about how I want to start of the new year and how I want to orient and organize my dreams, desires and goals. So here are a few of the things I'll be doing. Feel free to join me.
More than anything else, I'm dropping the goals, habits and resolutions. My focus this new year is on
1. Reflection
2. Reorienting
3. Dreaming
4. Focus
Reflection. I have a proclivity for sometimes spending and excess amount of time reflecting, analyzing, and critiquing my past. This year my reflection is with the aim to truly TAKE IN and APPRECIATE where I've been, all I've done, and the earnest well intentioned effort I've put in to various endeavors. In a sense, it's reflection with the aim to come to peace and acceptance with everything that's transpired to get me here. When I do that I'm far more present and energized to devote my attention with more intention towards what I desire.
Reorienting. When I venture into the wilderness, every now and then I get turned around and I lose my bearings. Just as in life- it's easy to lose track of our values, goals and priorities. So this year I'll be reorienting towards what is MOST ESSENTIAL to me. What are the three areas or buckets of my Life that are most pertinent to me where I will get the most ROI (return on my investment)? I feel a greater sense of patience within me that is developing that will help me take things slow and focus on one thing at a time, which I think is where a lot of people get off track with new years resolutions. They try to overhaul too many things all at once and then they ALL end up slipping through their fingers.
Dreaming. While the path of 'healing' is never ending with no finality point, there are certain points where focusing on where we've been is of lesser importance compared to where WE ARE GOING. So this year I'm going to really lean into the dreamer, my inner child, the part of me that believes anything is possible. I'll be creating vivid and specific dreams that push my comfort zone of what I believe is possible, followed by focusing on the next step in front of me.
Focus. Unless you've been living under a rock for the last 15-20 years the never ending list of distractions of modern life continues to grow. As does the difficulty of staying on task and moving toward our goals, dreams and desires. The antidote to this wild world of dopamine dealers....is FOCUS. As novel and exciting as it might be to switch from task task (which I continually catch myself doing) one of my primary desires for this year is to continue to cultivate my ability to focus. On one task at a time. Until it's finished. I believe focus is not only needed to pursue and accomplish our goals but also to heal. As the healing path can get littered with unlimited exercises, guided meditations, masterminds, therapy sessions and journal prompts, focusing on a singular point until we burn a hole through its untruth feels like a skill in and of itself. So whether you're trying to heal from a chronic physical illness or trying to create your Soul's Dharma. Focus will be an inextricable skill to cultivate.
While this all sounds beautiful and wonderful, let's be honest about the obstacles and resistance to dreaming and setting goals and intentions.
1. Defeated/Burnout.
I don't even remember if I set resolutions last year, let alone what they were and I doubt that I accomplished them. I have a pattern that I'm currently breaking- whether its with resolutions or quarterly planning, I can get high hopes, set goals, start of strong and then slowly peter out to a full halt before the time period even closes. So if you're like me and you feel tempted to feel defeated and unmotivated to set another year of resolutions worrying that it will only lead to another let down, then let's take a look at that.
A. I/You/We are not the same person we were the last time we set a goal. It is possible that this time we can re-commit with a more evolved and mature consciousness that is truly ready to follow up and follow through. No man steps in the same river twice for he is not the same man and it is not the same river.
B. It's ok to fall down and get back up again, that is spiral of consciousness. We evolve and revolve to what feels like a return to what seems like the same place, but it in fact it is actually a more expanded position.
C. What is your relationship like with yourself and your word? This relationship may be the very thing that needs your attention, which once given and nurtured, could be the key to accomplishing your goals and resolutions. When we repeatedly set goals, try, and 'fail' we can end up losing Trust with ourself. Just as you might begin to lose trust with a friend or partner who continually re-engages with dysfunctional patterns, the same thing applies to ourselves. Enter grace and forgiveness. Remember that we are all doing the best we can with what we have. Repair the relationship with yourself, show yourself that you are Trustworthy, and you can reengage reinvigorated on your path.
2. Lack of Clarity
If you're hesitant to set resolutions because you're unsure of what it is you truly want. Then GOOD. You at least realize that you DONT KNOW. Versus THINKING that you know and then realizing in October that everything you've been working for ISN'T actually what you TRULY CARE about. It's ok to NOT know what you deeply desire. This is a perfect time to get quiet, get still, go inward and listen to your Self, your Soul, its whisper and what it's calling you toward. Grab a journal, maybe a joint, maybe a microdose, maybe even a macrodose- set an intention and listen to what comes through.
4. Lack of accountability and follow through
With the way our society is set up and the lack of community, connection and intimacy, our societal setup makes it really easy for us to hide and slowly wither, decay and degenerate as it pertains to our goals and what we're moving toward. Unlike our days of tribal living, where we each had roles, responsibilities and assignments our progress or lack thereof was clearly and easily seen by our tribe. Nowadays we can wither in silence and almost no-one would know let alone be able to check on us. This is one of the primary reasons I created this community. So that we could let people into our world and allow ourselves to connect on deeper and more intimate level and be encouraged, supported and held accountable from a place of love and acceptance rather than scrutiny and criticism. So I'm going to create a form where everyone can upload a few notes about their goals for this year so that we can connect and support one another more fully.
While I hope this is helpful for you and your journey, ultimately. I don't care what you do. You are a sovereign being and you can do whatever you please. In fact I celebrate you doing something completely different and encourage you to share your process with the group. Ultimately, lean in and listen to the whisper of your own Soul in terms of how you want to engage with this season of quiet solitude. Sync up with nature and follow her guidance to rest, reflect and go inward.
Explore the Wilderness Within this New Year, and if you feel called I invited you to share your explorations with us here.
Much Love and Many Thanks for being here on this ride with me!
