Self-Talk
Self-talk is the internal dialogue or inner voice that a person has with themselves. It can be verbal or nonverbal, and can be intentional or automatic. Self-talk can be purposeful, like giving oneself instructions, or random, like making observations about the environment.
Self-talk can be positive or negative, and can influence a person's beliefs, emotions, and behavior. Positive self-talk can help with performance and provide assurance and motivation. Negative self-talk can lead to poor performance and can perpetuate a cycle of self-sabotage. People with anxiety or depression often experience destructive self-talk.
