Weekly Perfumery Challenge: The Ghost Note 👻
Can you create the scent of something without actually using it?
One of the most fascinating aspects of perfumery is our ability to recreate familiar smells without necessarily using the materials they originate from. Through a careful understanding of aroma chemicals, natural extracts, and their individual olfactory characteristics, we can create remarkably convincing illusions.
This week, we’re putting that knowledge and creativity to the test with The Ghost Note!
The Challenge
Your objective is to recreate a recognizable scent or note without using the actual material you’re attempting to replicate.
For example, let’s say you want to recreate the smell of a rose. You cannot use rose essential oil, rose absolute, or a premade rose base. Instead, you must explore the individual aromatic components that contribute to the recognizable scent of a rose and attempt to reconstruct it using other materials.
Perhaps you want to recreate the scent of freshly brewed coffee without coffee absolute or CO2 extract. Or maybe the rich, creamy aroma of vanilla without using any actual vanilla extracts.
The possibilities are nearly endless!
The Rules
  1. Choose your ghost note. Select a recognizable scent you want to recreate. This can be a flower, fruit, spice, wood, gourmand note, or nearly anything else you can imagine.
  2. No using the original material! You cannot use the essential oil, absolute, CO2 extract, tincture, or other direct extraction of the material you’re recreating.
  3. No premade accords or fragrance oils. Your ghost note must be constructed from individual aromatic materials rather than an existing base designed to replicate that scent.
  4. Use your knowledge of raw materials. Explore how different ingredients contribute to the character of your chosen note. Consider their volatility, intensity, odor profiles, and how they interact with one another.
  5. Keep it recognizable! The goal isn’t necessarily to create a complete perfume, but rather a convincing representation of your chosen scent.
Some Ideas to Get You Started
  • Rose without rose: Explore floral alcohols, rosy aromatics, green nuances, and subtle spicy facets.
  • Vanilla without vanilla: Recreate its sweet, creamy, balsamic, and warm characteristics.
  • Coffee without coffee: Explore roasted, nutty, bitter, and slightly smoky materials.
  • Sandalwood without sandalwood: Build a creamy, soft, woody accord using alternative materials.
These are only suggestions. Feel free to choose something entirely different!
What to Submit
Share the following with the group:
  • Your chosen ghost note.
  • The materials you selected and their proportions.
  • A brief explanation of why you chose those particular materials.
  • Your evaluation of the finished accord. How convincing is it? What worked, and what would you change?
The Purpose
This challenge is about much more than simply recreating a familiar smell.
It’s about learning to deconstruct an aroma into its individual characteristics and understanding how those characteristics can be reconstructed through formulation.
A rose doesn’t smell like just one thing. It can be fresh, green, citrusy, spicy, honeyed, powdery, and even slightly fruity. Understanding these individual facets allows us to create the impression of a rose without necessarily using rose itself.
This is one of the fundamental skills that separates simply mixing aromatic materials from truly understanding the art of perfumery.
Remember: Your first attempt doesn’t need to be perfect! Experiment, evaluate, make adjustments, and learn from the process. Sometimes the most valuable lessons come from the accords that don’t quite work as intended.
Let’s see how convincing your ghost notes can be!
Happy formulating! 👻
