My best advice: Do it scared
To date, I have made 3 decisions that have been integral to the start of my success:
  • Ended a long term relationship that seemed perfect at the time.
  • Left a stable 9-5 job without knowing what I wanted to do next.
  • Moved to a new city on a whim because of a ‘feeling’
When people ask, how I did it or how I knew that was the right decision, I simply say, “I didn’t. I was scared. Terrified to be honest. But I did it because the reality and outcome of staying where I was became scarier than the change itself would be”
To make bold decisions when you're scared requires strength. And it wasn’t until I had a clear ‘vision’ of where I wanted to go or who I wanted to be that I had the confidence to be able to make those decisions.
It was a simple exercise that helped me to clearly define that vision, ‘Write down your ideal day 10 years from today’.
I thought about it and thought about it. Then slowly, I wrote about waking up on a Sunday morning in 2034. I described everything from the weather to the people, from the events of the morning to the events of the week ahead. I described who I was and where I was going. I wrote in such great detail that I could see the morning playing out in my head with each word I wrote down on the page.
From that exercise, I then wrote specific 10 year goals.
I took those 10 year goals and broke them down into 5 year goals.
I then used the 5 year goals and compressed them even smaller to 1 year goals.
And then I looked at my life in that moment, exactly as it was and took in exactly
how I was feeling, only to realize if I wanted to get to where I was going,
some things would have to change.
And let me be clear, it wasn’t because anything in that moment was ‘bad’, it was simply because I knew where I was (metaphorically speaking) would not get me to where I wanted to be.
Which leads me to today:
  • On my own
  • Starting a business
  • Living in Vancouver
If you are feeling 'stuck' or unsure where it is you want to go, start with your vision and then you’ll find the decisions become clear.
