I'll cut to the chase.
Here’s the most effective way:
Contextual Repetition of Words.
The End.
Other methods, like flashcards or vocabulary lists, can work, but they’re nowhere near as effective as contextual repetition.
What do I mean by contextual repetition?
Contextual:
When you read a paragraph and encounter a new word, you learn its meaning in the context of that paragraph. You understand how the word is used in that specific instance, rather than just finding it on a vocabulary list.
Repetition:
When you come across the same word again.
The problem with flashcards and vocab lists is that while they provide repetition, they lack context. The human brain is great at remembering things, but not out of context. It needs additional information to properly ingrain new words into your vocabulary, making them usable in any situation.
Actionable Steps:
1) Go through a lot of reading and listening material.
Examples:
Comics
News
Books
TV shows
YouTube videos
2) Revisit the same material at a later date to add that contextual repetition loop to your learning routine.
PS: I did this mostly with news podcasts. I’d listen to a 10-minute news segment in the morning, find the meaning of any new words, and then revisit the same segment in the evening or the next day.
There’s a fantastic tool I know of that takes this technique and amplifies it. I can tell you all about it on a free call.
I’ll explain how to find the resource and use it in the most effective way possible.
