“Mother Is Gold” is a storytelling, filmmaking, and community-healing project honoring the sacred labor of Black motherhood. Through film, portraiture, oral histories, writing, and communal memory work, the project explores how Black mothers continue to create life, care, beauty, and survival in a world that often asks them to carry impossible weight without enough support. Inspired in part by the Yoruba proverb “Mother Is Gold,” alongside Black feminist thought and Ifá/Òrìṣà spiritual traditions, the project positions motherhood not simply as a biological identity, but as a relational, political, cultural, and spiritual practice. Rooted in diasporic memory and intergenerational storytelling, this first short film of the series centers five mothers and priestesses within the Ifá tradition, including creator and director Trinice Ìyá Fábùnmí McNally, as they reflect on motherhood, lineage, grief, spirituality, protection, survival, and transformation. “Mother Is Gold” is an evolving archive and offering to Black mothers—and to those who love them.
