Lithium and Autism
Lithium and Behavioral Regulation in Autism: What Does the Research Show? Lithium has traditionally been thought of as a prescription medication for bipolar disorder and mood stabilization, but emerging research suggests it may also have potential benefits for certain behavioral symptoms associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). A 2019 study published in Psychopharmacology Bulletin, “Revisiting Lithium: Utility for Behavioral Stabilization in Adolescents and Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder,” evaluated 19 adolescents and adults with ASD who experienced significant mood and behavioral dysregulation. Researchers examined the addition of prescription lithium carbonate to their existing treatment regimens. (PubMed Central (PMC)) What Did the Study Find? Approximately 74% of participants experienced improvement in maladaptive behaviors and mood symptoms after lithium was added. More than half were rated as “much improved” or “very much improved.” (PubMed Central (PMC)) Improvements were observed in symptoms such as: - Irritability and emotional dysregulation - Aggression and behavioral outbursts - Self-injurious behaviors - Perseverative and obsessive-compulsive behaviors - Agitation and impulsivity - Mood instability Interestingly, individuals with an accompanying ADHD phenotype showed particularly strong responses, with approximately 92% falling into the improved category in this small study. (PubMed Central (PMC)) Researchers discussed several possible mechanisms for lithium's effects, including its influence on serotonin and dopamine signaling, glutamate and calcium regulation, inositol signaling, and GSK-3β, an enzyme involved in numerous cellular and neurological signaling pathways. (PubMed Central (PMC)) What About Lithium Orotate?

Back From Summer Break!
I had the privilege of being asked to speak about my personal and professional experience with functional medicine and autism on the "Autism Life Today" podcast. Feel free to check it out here!
Updated Sections in "Glutathione" and "Toileting"
Hey Skoolers! I value all your feedback, what's so cool about this course platform is that I'm able to respond to you questions and insights with the curriculum in real time. I've added some new information in both the Glutathione regarding oral glutathione and how it can improve symptoms of ASD and use after vaccines or illness. As well as links to GI supplements and more information regarding "Getting Unstuck" in the Toileting section.

Leucovorin for ASD
There is a section in the course that covers Leucovorin (Folinic acid) as an "off-label" intervention for autism symptoms more specifically speech. However based on observation in treating patients in my own practice I've seen it improve social reciprocity as well. I recently came across a study done in China recently that echos this finding. I wanted to include it here: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12073535/ Those who have used Folinic acid or leucovorin with their child have you noticed this as well?
