I was in a toxic friend group some months ago, we had arguments every week on Discord.
Here is one thing I learned:
Most people listen to respond —> not to understand.
It may sound small, but it’s actually the root of most disconnection in our lives.
When we’re just waiting to speak, we’re not really with the person. We’re in our heads, defending ourselves, rehearsing our take.
-> The other person feels that.
It makes them feel unheard, unsafe, or dismissed; even if you didn’t mean it that way.
This breaks trust over time. And if you've been in toxic or chaotic friendships, this is one of the first things to unlearn. I have been there... 💀
👉 Try this: Next time someone is venting or opening up to you, instead of replying with your opinion or advice… just Say:
“It sounds like you’re feeling [reflect emotion]. Did I get that right?” ⭐
This simple mirror makes people feel safe, seen, and supported + it changes the whole dynamic.
