On Feb 23, 2025, VBPD Officers Cameron Girvin and Christopher Reese were ambushed and killed during a traffic stop by suspect John McCoy II, 42. A routine expired-plate stop turned deadly when he resisted and shot them. At Heroic Industries LLC, we train police, first responders, and tactical professionals to prevail. Expert Matt Good breaks it down:
The Incident
- Suspect slow-rolled to a dead-end, refused to exit after multiple requests.
- Pulled a gun, shot both officers in a tussle, then again as they lay defenseless.
- Suspect later found dead, likely self-inflicted; no VBPD shots fired.
Tactical Assessment
- Warning Signs: Slow to stop, argumentativeโhe was planning an attack. Non-compliance isnโt passive; itโs a flanking moveโtime to talk, run, or fight.
- Hesitation Kills: Newer officers (5-6 years on) gave too many chances. After one โno,โ heโs resistingโlegally under arrest. Case law says yank him out. No delays.
- Stay Violent: Why no taser? No rip-out? If he wonโt exit, force him. Punch, pull, controlโviolence within the law stops the threat cold.
- Stay Strong: Cut off his escapesโverbal, physical, mental. โYouโre under arrestโ shuts down the talk. Block the run. Force compliance or a fight he canโt win. Psychopaths quit when outmatched.
- Win the Fight: Bring it to them. Stay violent, stay strongโblunt their ambush, and youโre going home. Hesitation handed him the edge.
