12 Reasons Women MAY Remain Connected to Their Trauma
- Their trauma has become part of their identity.
When a woman has experienced rejection, abandonment, abuse, betrayal, or loss for years, she may begin defining herself by what happened to her. She knows who she is as a survivor, but she hasn't discovered who she is BEYOND survival.
2. Pain feels more familiar than peace.
When chaos has been a constant presence, peace can feel uncomfortable or even suspicious. She may find herself anticipating the next disappointment because her nervous system has learned to remain on alert.
3. They confuse healing with forgetting.
Some women fear that moving forward means minimizing what happened, excusing someone's behavior, or pretending the pain wasn't real. But healing doesn't require forgetting. It means the experience no longer has to control every decision.
4. They are still waiting for an apology or acknowledgment.
She wants someone to admit:
"I hurt you."
"You didn't deserve that."
"I was wrong."
Without that acknowledgment, she may feel unable to close the chapter. (THIS WAS ME!)
5. They have developed a trauma bond.
In some abusive or manipulative relationships, cycles of affection, mistreatment, fear, and reconciliation create powerful emotional attachments. Leaving those relationships can be psychologically and practically difficult, even when a woman recognizes the harm.
6. They feel guilty about choosing themselves.
Women who have spent decades being caregivers, wives, mothers, employees, and everyone else's support system may experience guilt when they begin establishing boundaries.
They've learned that putting themselves first is selfish rather than necessary.
7. They haven't learned who they are without the struggle.
When survival has consumed much of a woman's life, she may struggle to imagine an identity built around joy, freedom, purpose, and healthy relationships. The question becomes: "If I'm no longer fighting to survive, who am I?"
8. They are afraid of being hurt again.
Trauma can lead to avoidance, mistrust, emotional withdrawal, and hypervigilance.
What appears to be resistance to moving forward may actually be an attempt to prevent another painful experience.
9. They have never had a safe place to process what happened.
Some women have been told to:
"Get over it."
"Stop living in the past."
"Just pray about it."
But they may never have experienced the safety, support, or trauma-informed care needed to process their experiences.
10. They believe their suffering gives them value.
A woman who has always been praised for being strong may begin believing her worth is connected to how much she can endure.
She doesn't know how to receive support because she has always been the strong one.
11. Their circumstances keep reopening the wound.
Sometimes trauma isn't simply a memory. A woman may still be experiencing financial instability, family conflict, discrimination, unsafe relationships, or ongoing mistreatment.
In these situations, healing also requires addressing present-day conditions, not just changing her mindset.
12. They haven't given themselves permission to become someone new.
She may know she wants a different life, but change brings uncertainty.
She may grieve the years she lost, the relationships that changed, and the version of herself she thought she would become.
Moving forward can require grieving what was while learning to embrace what could be.
The difference between being connected to trauma and healing from trauma.
My past defines who I am.
My past is part of my story, not my entire identity.
I must always be strong.
I can be vulnerable and receive support.
I need an apology to move forward.
I can pursue healing without their acknowledgment.
Peace feels unfamiliar.
I can gradually learn to feel safe in peace.
I don't trust myself anymore.
I can rebuild trust in myself one decision at a time.
I am what happened to me.
I am more than what happened to me.
My sincerest heart’s desire is that we can take our traumas and use them to help others heal without it becoming a part of who we are. YOU WERE MADE FOR MORE!!!💛
