Free Practice Guide Here
Happy New Year. I took time last night to put together a clear, no-nonsense guide for you. These are the same recurring technical problems I see in nearly every student who comes to me — whether in online lessons, group classes, or one-to-one sessions. When players struggle to make their songs sound smooth and controlled, the cause is almost always one of these specific issues. Any deeper or more advanced problems can be traced back to them. This guide explains exactly what may be happening in your left and right hands, and provides direct recommendations for correcting it. I’ve also included a simple practice tracker you can print at home, so you can stay consistent and disciplined as you work through these fundamentals. Once these core mechanics are corrected, real progress follows.

The thing you don’t have
LISTEN UP! DISCOMFORT IS AT THE DOOR! You’re staring at that one riff, that one scale, that one goddamn transition you can’t master, and you’re ready to fold. You’re looking at some 15-year-old on Instagram shredding circles around you and you say, “I’m done. I’m too old. I’ll never be that good.” THAT IS VICTIM MENTALITY TALK! Are you really going to let a little mental anxiety and a "dream state" fantasy steal the joy of music from your soul? Are you going to sit there and stay soft because you aren't a "guitar star" yet? WAKE UP! Who are you competing against? There is no leader board. There is only YOU vs. YOU. Guitar isn't about magic; it’s about REPS. It’s about the repetitive, slow, technically excellent tasks that most people are too weak to endure. You want to master the instrument? You have to break that monster down into its smallest, microscopic fibers and rule the shit out of every single one. That monster—that master-level difficulty—isn't going anywhere. It’s going to stalk you in your sleep until you finally turn around and face it. But don’t be a fool. Don't throw blind punches and hope for a miracle. STAY HARD. Build those small, measured, surgical practice tasks and ATTACK THEM. Build the blocks. Own the discomfort. master the fibers. I’ll see you on the other side of the reps.
Failure
YOU are not a failure. You may have failed to make a chord change in time during a song. You may have failed to learn the notes on the neck after playing guitar casually for 25 years. You may have failed to hone your lead guitar chops. You may keep failing at playing your favorite solo. YOU are not a failure on guitar because you failed one thing one time. Don’t make it a catastrophe. It’s not the cardiac unit of a regional hospital. It’s a hobby, a passion, an art, a science. Re-set your mind-set. Perform a live autopsy on your playing. What went wrong? When? How? Why? YOU are a success because you are pursuing a dream 98% of the population never will.

Learn the neck using SIMPLE Arpeggios
Such a simple process. You learn three things. An arpeggio shape (easily moveable), the neck note names, and how chords are built.
