I like certain terpenes (linalool, limonene) and wondered how to increase these terpenes and how to increase CBN for sleep. I had always thought that Terpenes were part of plant metabolism but then I heard that Terpene packs can be added. I found an in depth article (on plant in general) on the Biosynthesis of Plant Terpenoids in public med. It came out May 2025 and has alot of in depth biochemical info which I had to skip but also has a lot of other interesting info about terpenes. PMC12114759. That led to another article about cytochrome P450 oxygenase, an enzyme that increases terpenes and that they are using bacteria and yeast to produce this. I am concerned that some industries are getting their terpenes synthetically through bacteria and yeast rather than through normal growth organic processes. I would like to know what is in the terpenes packs, and how it affects health. Would we know if we are buying flower at the dispensary if it contains synthetic terpenes?
From what I read in the article (I am no expert and just learning how), plants develop terpenes in response to stress. It can be insect stress, light uva uvb stress, etc and that they develop terpenes as a protective response. The terpenes are antimicrobial and have other healthful properties. The terpenes carbon skeleton starts genetically and the environment leads to biochemical development. The stickiness on the female buds, is them trying to attract the male pollen which can be invisible and in the air or brought in in people’s hair or clothes. The smells are the terpenes. What about the terpenes in other products? I don’t want to just trust for profit industries to think about my health! I want organically grown terpenes! Natural! How can I tell if synthetic terpenes are added?
