1. The Power of the Tongue and Words
These verses reveal how our words carry life or death, and how seriously God takes our speech.
  • Proverbs 18:21 — “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”
  • Matthew 12:36–37 — “But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”
  • James 3:5–6 — “The tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.”
  • Proverbs 15:4 — “A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.”
  • Proverbs 12:18 — “The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.”

2. Speaking Life and Blessing
These verses teach us to use our mouths to build up, bless, and bring peace.
  • Ephesians 4:29 — “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up.”
  • Colossians 4:6 — “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.”
  • Proverbs 16:24 — “Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.”
  • Proverbs 10:11 — “The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life.”
  • Proverbs 10:21 — “The lips of the righteous nourish many, but fools die for lack of sense.”

  • Isaiah 50:4 — “The Sovereign Lord has given me a well-instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary.”

3. The Dangers of Careless, Evil, or Deceptive Words
God warns us to avoid lying, gossip, slander, and empty words.
  • Proverbs 6:16–19 — “There are six things the Lord hates… a lying tongue, a false witness who pours out lies, and a person who stirs up conflict.”
  • Psalm 34:13 — “Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from telling lies.”
  • Psalm 101:5 — “Whoever secretly slanders his neighbor, him I will destroy.”
  • Ephesians 5:4 — “Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.”
  • James 3:8–9 — “No human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people made in God’s likeness.”

4. Words Reveal the Heart
Our mouth is the reflection of what fills our heart and mind.
  • Matthew 12:34 — “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.”
  • Luke 6:45 — “A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart.”
  • Psalm 19:14 — “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord.”
  • Proverbs 4:23–24 — “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Keep your mouth free of perversity; keep corrupt talk far from your lips.”
  • Matthew 15:18 — “But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them.”

Our mouths are meant to declare God’s truth and speak His promises into the atmosphere.
  • Isaiah 55:11 — “So shall My word be that goes out from My mouth; it shall not return to Me empty.”
  • Joshua 1:8 — “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night.”
  • Romans 10:8–10 — “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart… if you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ you will be saved.”
  • Psalm 119:172 — “May my tongue sing of Your word, for all Your commands are righteous.”
  • Jeremiah 1:9 — “Then the Lord put out His hand and touched my mouth and said, ‘Behold, I have put My words in your mouth.’”
  • Ezekiel 3:10–11 — “Son of man, listen carefully and take to heart all the words I speak to you. Go and speak to the people.”

6. Words of Prayer, Praise, and Declaration
Our mouths are designed for worship, not destruction.
  • Psalm 63:3–4 — “Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you.”
  • Hebrews 13:15 — “Through Jesus, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess His name.”
  • Psalm 71:8 — “My mouth is filled with Your praise, declaring Your splendor all day long.”
  • Psalm 119:171 — “May my lips overflow with praise, for You teach me Your decrees.”
  • Psalm 107:2 — “Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy.”
  • Psalm 34:1 — “I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.”
  • Romans 15:6 — “So that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

7. Consequences and Rewards of Our Words
Our speech determines the direction and harvest of our lives.
  • Proverbs 12:14 — “From the fruit of their lips people are filled with good things.”
  • Proverbs 18:20 — “From the fruit of their mouth a person’s stomach is filled; with the harvest of their lips they are satisfied.”
  • Matthew 12:37 — “For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
  • James 3:9–10 — “With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings… my brothers and sisters, this should not be.”
  • Proverbs 14:3 — “A fool’s mouth lashes out with pride, but the lips of the wise protect them.”
  • Psalm 12:3–4 — “May the Lord silence all flattering lips and every boastful tongue.”

8. Words of Jesus
Jesus’ words brought healing, authority, and truth — showing us how to speak from the Spirit.
  • John 6:63 — “The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life.”
  • John 12:49–50 — “For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say.”
  • John 14:10 — “The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority; rather, it is the Father living in me.”
  • Mark 11:23 — “Whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes… it will be done.”
  • Luke 4:32 — “They were amazed at His teaching, because His words had authority.”
  • Luke 7:7 — “Say the word, and my servant will be healed.”
