It was great to see

and husband Paulo at the São Martinho, Silver Coast meetup yesterday.

She came bearing gifts, including Língua de Gato (cat's tongue biscuits) enjoyed by our kids, and a 'device' made locally to her (in Miranda Do Corvo, near Coimbra), pictured.

What is this grey item on top of the beautifully embroidered tablecloth? And what is its purpose?
