Some fun news this morning: Dating here, a massive water fight & Portugal's best barman

If I had a newspaper reporting the news in Portugal, in English, I'd call it 'The Cockerel', for obvious reasons (I think).

I had a fun and honest chat with Natasha Donn and Paul Rees recently, during our most recent weekly news review for The Resident, looking at how people actually meet and build relationships in Portugal.
We are clearly 'old school' in our views that included the tactics of utilising the magic of daily life, our community, cafés, and “Bom Dia!” conversations to reel in that special fish. Fancy a massive water fight?
Thanks to for the (wet) heads-up on this funtastic event happening in Lisbon this weekend where they're bracing for a summer soaking as Watergun Royale return with their "Luta Épica de Pistolas de Água" (Epic Water Gun Fight).
The appropriately cooling and fluid-based fun will take place at Fonte Luminosa on Alameda Dom Afonso Henriques on Saturday, 4 July 2026. Running from 3pm to 5pm, the two-hour event invites participants of all ages to bring their own water guns and join what organisers are billing as the most epic splash-fight of the summer - a playful, family-friendly way to beat the July heat in one of the city's more scenic fountain settings.
The event is open to under-14s when accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, and takes place entirely outdoors and in-person at the Fonte Luminosa site.

And finally, and of possible fascination for our very own top mixologist - - Pedro Pereira has recently become Portugal's top barman.
Aged 23, and from Lisbon's Monkey Mash bar, Pedro has been crowned the winner of the World Class Portugal 2026 competition and will now go on to represent the country at the Global Final in Scotland this October.
The high-stakes competition put bartenders to the test across several categories, including blind tastings, improvisation, storytelling, and a grueling market challenge. For the market challenge, contestants were given a €100 budget to purchase ingredients and build a completely original cocktail from scratch.
To sample Pereira's award-winning creations or the bar's regular menu, you can visit Monkey Mash at Praça da Alegria 66B, just off Avenida da Liberdade. Since opening in 2019, the tropical-inspired cocktail destination has made a name for itself by running its own on-site laboratory, heavily focusing on sustainability and waste reduction.
