I thought I’d share something close to my heart. I created a live art event called The Studio Session, and I’m thrilled to say that thanks to a grant from the Town of Vic Park, it’s going ahead on 4 April!
When I found out my application was successful, I also felt a wave of fear and self-doubt. Why am I creating a live art event when I barely make my own art right now? What does that even mean? With two boys under three, it was easy to feel like there wasn’t time, but I decided that even 5 minutes a day of putting colour on something - paper, cardboard, or iPad - was enough. I needed to show up for my own creative practice.
What I realised through this process is that my art isn’t just about who I was before motherhood. It’s about who I am becoming as a mum, and the shifts, the struggles, and the quiet moments of reflection that rarely get spoken about.
One day, I took a brief reset at the beach while my babies were at their grandparents. I snapped a photo of myself in stillness - and in that moment, the sun reflected off my phone and hit my throat, lighting up my throat chakra. It felt like a symbol of speaking my truth, of expressing what’s been held inside. That image became the inspiration for my first painting of the year. I’ve now completed it as an A5 practice painting, and it’s just the beginning of capturing moments of shifts in consciousness and awareness. The video is a little snippet of my creation journey.
I’m also excited to share that I’ll be entering this piece into the Incognito Art Show, and I hope it connects with others who are navigating transformation, motherhood, and the everyday miracle of presence.
I’d love to hear your thoughts, and if you’re nearby, maybe you can join me for The Studio Session in April (either as an artist or a collector) - hoping to make a space to create, reflect, and connect.
