📚✏️ FRESH START PRO TAX EDUCATION ✏️📚 📝 Understanding the FIVE Tax Filing Statuses
Your filing status affects your tax rates, standard deduction, and eligibility for certain credits. Here’s what each one means! 💡
📘 1️⃣ SINGLE Generally for taxpayers who are unmarried, divorced, or legally separated under a qualifying decree on December 31 and do not qualify for another filing status.
✏️ Being separated and living in different homes does not automatically make you Single for tax purposes.
📗 2️⃣ MARRIED FILING JOINTLY For married couples who agree to file one return together, combining their income and reporting eligible deductions and credits.
✏️ You may file jointly even if only one spouse earned income. Both spouses generally share responsibility for the return and taxes owed.
📙 3️⃣ MARRIED FILING SEPARATELY For married taxpayers who file separate returns. Special rules determine how income, deductions, and credits are reported.
✏️ Filing separately can limit certain tax benefits. Compare both options before deciding which eligible status works best for your situation.
📕 4️⃣ HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD Generally, you must:
✅ Be unmarried or considered unmarried under IRS rules. ✅ Pay MORE than half the cost of keeping up your home. ✅ Have a qualifying person who generally lived with you for more than half the year. Special rules apply to dependent parents.
✏️ Having a child or paying bills alone does not automatically qualify you. Married taxpayers living apart must meet additional requirements.
📓 5️⃣ QUALIFYING SURVIVING SPOUSE May be available for the TWO tax years following the year your spouse died if you meet all requirements, including:
✅ You have not remarried. ✅ You were eligible to file jointly for the year your spouse died. ✅ You maintain a home for an eligible dependent child or stepchild who generally lives with you all year. ✅ You pay more than half the cost of keeping up that home.
✏️ This status uses joint-return tax rates and the corresponding standard deduction. In the year your spouse dies, you may still qualify to file jointly.
📚🖊️ FRESH START PRO REMINDER Your filing status generally depends on your marital status on December 31. Choose a status you legally qualify for and keep records supporting your eligibility!
