🌿 Welcome to Beyond School and Start Here
Aloha, and welcome! I’m Courtney, a licensed educational psychologist, former high school teacher, and mom who believes education should honor the whole child rather than force every child into the same system. Beyond School is for parents who are questioning conventional education, exploring homeschooling or unschooling, or simply trying to understand what their child genuinely needs to thrive. You do not need to have everything figured out before you begin. This community is a place to question what you have been taught, better understand your child, explore the options available to your family, and begin creating an education that actually fits. ✨ Your first step is the Start Here course. Inside, I’ll help you understand how to use this community and begin shifting from “What is wrong with my child?” to “What is my child’s unique way of learning, developing, and moving through the world?” 👉https://www.skool.com/free-your-mind-collective-2099/classroom/9459de85?md=586bd0f86387472d8eb4539d2e7a5e42 Afterward, introduce yourself in the comments! Tell us: 🌱 Where you live 🌱 The age of your child or children 🌱 What brought you to Beyond School So happy to build this community of like-minded curious families and get to know your unique children!
Don't push through the "back to school anxiety"
As the school year begins, many children are experiencing stomachaches, headaches, sleep struggles, meltdowns, shutdowns, irritability, or intense resistance. It can be tempting to reassure them with, “You’ll be fine,” or assume they simply need time to adjust. But anxiety is communication. It may be telling us that something about the environment, expectations, pace, social dynamics, or loss of autonomy does not feel safe or sustainable for that child. This doesn’t necessarily mean you need to withdraw your child from school tomorrow. It does mean their experience deserves curiosity, rather than "you'll be fine". Instead of asking only, “How do we get them to go?” we can begin asking: - What specifically feels overwhelming? - When does the anxiety become strongest? - Does my child feel emotionally and physically safe? - Are their learning needs being understood? - Is the environment asking them to disconnect from themselves in order to succeed? - What could we change, even in a small way? School is only one way to educate a child. Homeschooling, unschooling, hybrid programs, learning pods, microschools, apprenticeships, community-based learning, and individualized education are all possibilities. This school year, you have permission to look outside the box. You do not have to wait until your child is completely burned out, refusing school, or losing confidence before taking their distress seriously. Sometimes the most important thing we can say is: “I believe you. Let’s understand what your anxiety is trying to tell us, and explore what else might be possible.” That is where a different kind of education can begin. Please share below how you are questioning the traditional path and creating an education that truly fits their child. Why it's important for us to choose the uncomfortable thing...
https://courtneymeiers.substack.com/p/the-irony-of-avoiding-discomfort?r=3abtz1 "Look around. People everywhere choosing the most comfortable house, bed, food, with the easiest partner that doesn’t confront them and become their mirror…to later divorce, split the house, leave the king saze cal bed (since it likely can’t be cut in half), and end up with dis-ease from it all. We either choose the discomfort, or the discomfort will choose us."

Connecting to the heart...instead of the mind.
One very tried and true way to free our mind is to connect to our HEART. How can we support and guide children into connecting to their heart regularly as much as the schools and society push them to push from the mind? ❤️
