I have become one of the most successful NA focused brick + mortars in the US (by calling it a Cafe) but I almost closed it 6 months in, in 2021. I also tried to sell it twice in 2022.
I thought I would be better at the ownership job, after managing so many bars, working in about 60 restaurants, and helped open 10+ restaurants/bars for other people in my 20 year bartending career.
I love people, and work with them well, but I wasn't a great people manager. I bring the good vibes and fun freestyle way, but what was needed was structure, consistency, stand operating procedures (SOP's), consistency, expectations when people start, and systems. I needed a great General Manager who's strengths were my weaknesses.
What i learned a few years in (and yes, i'm SO glad I didn't sell. It was worth 50-60k back then, now its worth 300k+) was that I did have the ability to attract top talent to help me do the management properly.
What i've learned in my 5th year: is BUSINESS isn't what we're taught in school, and what we THINK it is intuitively may be holding us back. Because we may be unknowingly not choosing the right paths to take to get up the mountain to the first million. All because I simply didn't know. (Ignorance Tax)
I"m here to share everything I know so you and the rest of this community aren't going at it alone. This way, more people will become aware, build scalable businesses in this wellness movement, and thus let other people know "whats good" and make the world a healthier place.
Please leave a comment of what you learned in your journey!
