0:00 Hey guys, as you all know, I promised to do a presentation on basically the broad spectrum of what dopamine is, however, I have had a few things that have stopped me in the way, roadblocks, etc, uhm, heh. 0:16 Just to be completely transparent, I had originally planned on recording this in Starbucks, but, as you all know, if every student is rushing to Starbucks after class, it is extremely difficult to find any quiet time in that time, and then when I had actually gotten home, I had actually caught in a sore 0:34 throat, and today, I realize it's not a sore throat, I've actually just caught a cold, which, at the time of recording this, I am still sick. 0:41 You might not notice it, because I am very good at forcing myself to do things I do not want to do, and this is one of them, but I realize that's why I need to do it for you all, so let's get into it. 0:52 So why does dopamine matter? If your dopamine system is constantly craving instant gratification, you tend to chase easy alternatives, quick fixes, and crave unhealthy options. 1:01 You see, your dopamine system is always trying to replace and regulate that homeostasis that you were first set at, right? 1:08 So whether that be you have an hour of free time so you chase a little bit of dopamine, that's fine, but over time you start to actually build up more and more habits. 1:18 And the problem with that is that they're for fit. Sorry, they're ever building. So once you start to build one habit, another habit stacks on top of that, and then it just continues into this big giant tower, if you will. 1:32 And so let's move on to the next segment, which would be focus. if you're a consultant. So what does that really mean, right? So if we already know that you're stacking and building habits, you're also going to be diminishing your focus because as you build more and more habits, the actual habits that 1:59 got you to a place where you felt secure, for example, your work, if you feel less, If you feel less motivated to do the actual work, it's probably because you want more dopamine. 2:10 And let's be real here, when you're sitting there compiling a document or a motion, you definitely don't feel like sitting there and doing that as opposed to scrolling on social media for 30 minutes And another thing when it comes to dopamine is that instant gratification is so easy to It's almost so 2:28 easy to just click off of whatever you were doing before, whether it be work, whether it be a presentation, whether it be a long-term video that you were editing, whatever it may be. 2:36 It's so easy to click off and go to Instagram really quickly and check up on what everyone else is doing around so let's move on to the direct influence on discipline. 2:44 If you find yourself losing focus, one of the first diminishing sub-products will be the loss of overall mental discipline. And the truth is, if you're losing your focus and you're stacking those habits, you're stacking them, building discipline, this ginormous tower, what's going to come of that? 2:59 You're going to lose the discipline that got you into that place where you were actually secure or you felt like you were doing a lot of work. 3:05 I mean, I can personally tell you, if I sit there for about two hours or three days and just do absolutely nothing, my discipline will be wrecked. 3:13 Because the truth is, to actually get to a place of discipline, you have to tell yourself no to certain things. 3:18 But if you're telling yourself yes, yes, yes to all of these different sorts of sources of dopamine, how much harder is it for you to actually say Especially when you've been saying yes to everything that comes to your And our brain is always trying to regulate good so when you say yes to so many things 3:34 , your brain doesn't know how to take it all And so, I would give you the example of a cat. If you always say yes to the cat, will it be disciplined enough to not do the one thing that you don't want it to do, the time when you don't want it to do that certain It probably won't. 3:45 It probably why is It's because you keep telling it yes, yes, yes, you can do what you want, you can do what you and then when the time comes, it has no discipline to say no, I must not do this because my owner doesn't want me to do And so when you apply this to your brain, even though it might be it 4:03 makes sense because your brain is wired to take whatever you condition it to If You can, If condition your brain to sit there for 5 hours on a document, completely maximizing the potential of that document, guess what it will do? 4:15 It will feel gratified in doing so, and it will probably do another document the next day. If you tell your brain, hey, let's stay on our thinkorswim platform and trade for another 6 brain will go ahead and go, hey, we'll do that tomorrow, we'll make some more money. 4:30 But if you take a 15 minute break in between each of your trades, you're going to eventually build up more and more habits of just scrolling and doing nothing. 4:40 And eventually 15 minutes turns into 30 minutes. And how much harder is it for you to say no once you've built up that selection of And this is where it directly ties in, which is why it's going to link in to our next segment, the loop influence of a diminished discipline system is a direct loop. 4:55 The more you lose the discipline to chase long-term gratification, the easier it is to get looped into what they call a dopamine so, as I previously mentioned with the stock trader, If you're constantly taking a 15-minute break to do whatever you Your brain's gonna start to think it's okay to do this 5:09 . Every single time that you make a trade or you close in on a brain's gonna tell you, hey, we need a break after We need to do something to refresh the Or even tell ourself that we've done the truth is, this is so far from the And it could not be further from the truth, in our brain is conditioned to 5:25 do whatever we tell it to do. more you start to build up those habits, the more your brain starts to accept those breaks, those long-term Those longer sessions of scrolling on your phone. 5:35 The longer session of playing a video game on your phone. Or even your computer. Or even taking an hour out of your day to go and hop on your Xbox and do absolutely nothing for the next three hours because you want to play one more And that is all true. 5:50 Which is why it's the utmost important thing. It's the to make sure you're taking your time to do as much as you can for every little thing that you have to do and you know you want to do. 5:58 And so, I'm just going to cut it there because I really really do think that once you understand these four basic principles of what dopamine really is and how they can affect us and how they implement into our it's that much more simple to actually make the change. 6:11 And I honestly think that more than simply 60% of you, right here, is enough for you guys to actually implement this into your life and understand how you're being affected by and how you can personally make a change. 6:23 But as with everything that I do, the tool I have the discipline to actually implement those tools into your daily life, is completely up to you. 6:33 my question is, are you going to regulate your dopamine or are you going to take it for granted? choice is yours, guys. 6:40 Thank you, and I'll see you on the next presentation.
