Start here: your first 10 minutes
Welcome. This post stays at the top so you always know where to begin. 1. Say hello on the introductions post so we know who's here. 2. Open the Classroom tab. Everything is already unlocked - all four weeks, right now. Nothing is drip-released and nothing is waiting on approval. 3. Start Week 1, Lesson 1: "The Jobs Behind IT." It's short. You can finish it today. 4. Ask questions here. If something doesn't make sense, post it. That's useful information for us, and I answer every one. A few things worth knowing up front: - It's free. All four weeks. No card, no trial, nothing to buy to finish. - It's self-paced. "4 weeks" is a suggested pace, not a deadline. - No experience is assumed. If you've never thought about how a computer actually works, you are exactly who this was built for. Finish all four weeks and you'll be ready for our full CompTIA Tech+ prep program. But that's later. For now: Week 1, Lesson 1.

RAM vs. storage: the mix-up that trips up almost everyone
If you have ever called your computer "slow" without being sure why, there is a decent chance the real issue is RAM, storage, or you mixing up which one is the problem — and that mix-up is one of the most common ones in IT, not just for beginners. Think of it this way: RAM is your desk. It is where your computer keeps everything it is actively working on right now — open programs, open browser tabs, whatever is running this second. Storage (your hard drive or SSD) is the filing cabinet. It is where everything lives when it is not in active use: your documents, photos, installed programs, the operating system itself. A full desk (low RAM) makes everything you are doing right now feel sluggish. A full filing cabinet (low storage) means you cannot save new things, but it will not necessarily slow down what is already open. Different symptoms, different fixes — and knowing which one you are looking at is a real troubleshooting skill, not trivia. This is exactly the kind of concept covered in Week 2 of First 30 Days in Tech, and it is also foundational vocabulary for the CompTIA Tech+ exam once you are ready for that step. Which one have you mixed up before — RAM or storage? Open Week 2 (Computer Basics and Study Setup) in First 30 Days in Tech — it's free, no card required.

You do not need a new computer to start in IT
The most common reason people tell me they cannot start learning IT: their laptop is old. Here's the thing — an old laptop is a better learning tool than a new one. You can safely break it, take it apart, reinstall the operating system, and put it back. That's the whole Week 4 module in First 30 Days. A machine you're afraid to touch teaches you nothing. Week 2 covers exactly what setup you need, and the answer is less than you think. What is the oldest device still working in your house? Open Week 2 — it's free, no card required.

The three letters after the dot are not decoration
You have seen files named "resume.docx" or "photo.jpg" a thousand times, but here is what most people never learn: the three or four letters after the dot are not decoration. That is the file extension, and it tells your computer which program should open the file and how the data inside is structured. ".docx" means a Word document. ".jpg" and ".png" mean image files, but they compress and store color differently. ".pdf" means the file will look the same no matter what device opens it - which is why job applications almost always ask for a PDF, not a Word doc. Here is the practical skill: if a file will not open, or opens looking wrong, check the extension before you assume something is broken. A photo renamed to end in ".docx" will not become a Word document. The extension has to match the actual file format underneath, not just the file name. Try this today: open your Downloads folder and look at what is actually in there. If your computer hides extensions by default, turn that setting on - First 30 Days Week 1 walks through exactly where to find it. What is one file extension you have seen but never actually knew the meaning of? Turn on file extensions in your settings today, then drop the weirdest one you find in the comments - or open Week 1 if you have not started yet.
