VOUS — “Dying to Tell Someone”
Prayer & Position
James 5:13–16
It’s not performance that makes prayer effective. It’s the position you are in Christ.
What are the things you’re keeping back because they’re painful?
  • Maybe it’s something you did.
  • Maybe it’s something that was done to you.
The thing about secrets is that we can keep them, but eventually they start keeping us.
  • They live rent-free in our lives.
  • But we’re paying for them with our peace.
Secrets separate.
Confession creates community.
1. Say Something
James 5:16
James says:
  • Is anyone in trouble? Pray.
  • Is anyone sick? Pray.
  • Is anyone in sin? You better confess that, sis.
Every condition has a confession.
Sometimes we wait for other people to call and check on us, but sometimes you have to call someone and tell them what’s going on so they can pray for you.
For every circumstance, there is a confession.
We have no problem letting everyone know when we’re doing good. We don’t mind talking about things when they make us look good.
But when the pain increases, we get quiet.
When we constantly say, “I’m fine,” we can close the door to our healing.
  • We’re not called to bleed on everyone.
  • There is a difference between privacy and secrecy.
  • Privacy says, “Someone needs to know.”
  • Secrecy says, “No one needs to know.”
You don’t need everyone, but you do need someone.
2. Stop Hiding
When God asks Adam, “Where are you?” He isn’t asking because He lost Adam.
God sees him.
The question isn’t about Adam’s location. It’s an invitation for Adam to admit his condition.
God is still asking us:
“Where are you?”
Where is the real you?
What’s actually going on?
Sin can lead to guilt, and guilt can turn into shame. Shame tells us to hide.
All of us want to be known without actually being seen. So we hide and try to carry everything on our own.
But hiding is hard work, and silence has a cost.
We can become so accustomed to pain and trauma that we start pushing away the very things and people God may use to help us.
If we never put words to certain things, they can begin showing up in other areas of our lives.
Anything you can’t talk about can begin to control you.
3. What Stays Hidden Can’t Be Healed
Psalm 32:3
We’re dying to tell someone, but if we continue carrying the secret, eventually the secret starts eating away at us.
We have to stop hiding.
Sometimes we come to God wanting Him to perform a private miracle while refusing to expose the wound.
We can learn how to:
  • Deal with a wound.
  • Hide a wound.
  • Function with a wound.
  • Live around a wound.
But we cannot properly heal a wound that we refuse to uncover.
Psalm 32:5
Until we uncover the thing that hurt us, we can remain stuck instead of experiencing healing and restoration.
God is present and ready to bring freedom.
4. Let Somebody In
James 5:16
“Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.”
There are people who are saved but still hurting.
We can know Jesus and still carry wounds that God wants to heal.
Your confession can be connected to your healing.
Confession isn’t the destination. It simply opens the door and allows someone else to come alongside you and pray.
Scripture says the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.
Sometimes we remain general and vague because vulnerability is uncomfortable.
But there is power when we stop hiding and allow someone else's faith to join with ours in prayer.
Secrets separate us.
Confession connects us.
Confession isn’t only about letting something out.
It’s about letting someone in.
5. We Pray for Each Other
The reason we confess is not so people can judge us.
We confess so we can pray for one another.
We were never designed to carry everything alone.
There are moments when we need someone beside us saying:
“I know what you're carrying now, and I'm going to carry it with you in prayer.”
“You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.”
Confession brings things into the light.
Community gives us people to stand beside us.
Prayer invites God into the places we’ve been trying to carry alone.
Main Takeaway
You don’t need everyone to know, but you need someone.
Stop hiding.
Say something.
Let somebody in.
Let them pray with you.
Secrets separate. Confession connects.
