Truth:
The Christian life begins with receiving before it becomes about doing.
Micro-Teaching:
Something I’ve been reflecting on more over the past year is how easily we drift into thinking our life with God is mostly about effort. Even when we understand the gospel, we still slip back into the idea that growth is mainly about discipline, improvement, or trying harder to become the kind of person we think we should be.
But the New Testament begins somewhere else. It begins with Christ and with what has already been accomplished in Him. Union with Christ means the starting point of the Christian life is not our striving but our participation in His life. Instead of trying to manufacture spiritual life, we learn to live from what has already been given.
Practice:
Take a moment today to acknowledge before God that your life with Him begins with what He has already done, not with what you are trying to accomplish.
Reflection:
Where do you most often feel pressure to earn what God has already given in Christ?
Word of the Day:
Union with Christ — the reality that believers participate in the life of Christ rather than constructing their own spiritual life.
