Level Ground
‘The rich and poor meet together: the LORD is the maker of them all.’ Proverbs 22:2
Proverbs 22:2 levels the ground beneath every human life. Wealth and poverty may divide society, but Scripture insists that both stand equally before God as created beings. This verse strips away the illusion that status, income, or influence determines worth. At the deepest level, every person shares the same origin, breath, and accountability before the same Creator.
This truth echoes throughout Scripture. Job declared, Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb? Likewise, Malachi asked, Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? These verses confront pride in the rich and despair in the poor. The wealthy are reminded that their resources did not make them superior, and the poor are reminded that their lack does not make them forgotten or inferior. God stands as Maker of both, and therefore Judge of both.
Practically, Proverbs 22:2 reshapes how believers treat others. James warns against honoring the rich while despising the poor, teaching that such partiality contradicts faith in Christ. When a believer truly grasps that the Lord made them all, compassion replaces contempt, humility replaces arrogance, and generosity replaces indifference. This verse presses the conscience to examine how one speaks to, serves, and values people across social and economic lines.
At the same time, the verse brings comfort and responsibility. For the poor, it affirms dignity and divine attention, reminding them that their value is not measured by possessions. For the rich, it brings accountability, reminding them that stewardship matters more than accumulation. Scripture teaches, Unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required. Both rich and poor will answer not for what they had, but for how they feared the Lord and walked in obedience.
Ultimately, Proverbs 22:2 directs the heart away from earthly comparisons and toward eternal reality. In the presence of God, titles fade, accounts empty, and appearances vanish. What remains is a created soul standing before its Maker. When this truth governs the heart, it produces reverence toward God and mercy toward men, shaping a life that reflects the character of the One who made them all.
