In 1 Chronicles 19, the Ammonites are receiving a peace offering from King David. The intentions behind the gesture were good hearted. However, the new king of the Ammonites and his council over thought this simple gesture, assuming that there must be some secret agenda with the message. They humiliate the messengers and send them away, only then realizing their folly. After realizing that they may have offending King David, they got their armies ready and paid other kings to join in the battle, which in the end they lost.
Perception is so powerful. I was telling a friend the other day that sometimes we make an issue out of something that we don't need to make an issue out of. For example, if you believe you are busy, you are busy. If you believe you are in control, then you are in control. In the Ammonites case, if you believe you are threatened, then you are threatened. Their own assumption of reality became reality. How often do we "think" ourselves into a problem?
Love you all. Have a good day!
