Spicy or Not?
I am currently studying for the NPL Master Qualification. It’s on a whole different level to the Practitioner, I have been learning lots.
Last week we were studying Meta Programs and how we process things. I have long considered myself to be a bit Nero spicey.
My kids came to me years ago with the "we are ADHD and we got it from you!" Apparently, it’s hereditary!
When they presented their evidence, I had to agree that had me bang to rights. Yes, I do set out to weed the flower border and then find I am pruning a tree on the other side of the garden. Or I am going to clean and tide the lounge, only to find somehow, I have ended up scrubbing the toilet.
Yes, I do struggle to stay on task!
So last week I had a co-working session with good friend and buddy @Gemma Coles. I told her I needed to be more focus at work and that I jump from one thing to another and find I have fifteen tabs open at once!
Anyone else do this???
She taught me about time blocking. I know she does this easily, I have always admired this trat of hers.
So, I bought a new diary (Steven Bartletts 1% Diary, which is awesome!) and set about mastering this new time blocking skill.
So back to the NLP and last week’s learnings, yep, a spicy switch!
The basic meta programmes align with the four major elements of NLP.
The major elements of NLP are the persons:
External behaviour – is what they do.
Internal process – how they do it.
Internal State - determines why somebody does something.
What if over time - answers the question, what would happen if they did.
Still with me?
Now each of these basic meta programmes isn’t a dichotomy; there is a continuum from two extremes.
With meta programmes, we ask one question, and then we use our own subjectivity to determine where the person is on the continuum from their answers. The questions are designed to take somebody out to the extreme.
Here is where it gets interesting, as I started to read and digest this subject I knew exactly where I sat.
Ask yourself these questions, there is no right or wrong answer.
1. External Behaviour. When it's time to really recharge your batteries, do you prefer to be alone or with people?
A. Extrovert B. Introvert 1.
2. Internal Process. If you were going to study a certain subject, would you be more interested solely in the facts and their application for the now (what I need to know now), or would you be more interested in the ideas and relationships between the facts and their application for the future (big picture)?
A. Sensor B. Intuitor
3. Internal State. When you make a decision, do you rely on impersonal reason and logic, or more on your personal values?
A. Thinking B. Feeling
4. Adaptation Operator If we were going to do a project together, would you prefer that it was outlined, planned and orderly or would you prefer that we were able to be more flexible in the project?
A. Judger B. Perceiver
Bam, question four hit me between the eyes, I am a Perceiver by nature, and I am trying to acquire the skills of my buddy, who is a natural Judger, for whom the skill of being structured and orderly comes naturally.
So maybe not so spicy after, just different Meta Process in my brain!
The reason we study this in NLP is to understand how a person thinks and makes decisions. Useful in many areas including business and relationship modelling. (modelling is a process we use, but that’s another subject, my spicy brain is not going there now!)
As you answered those questions, did you think to yourself, yep this is me?
Please feel free to share any thoughts below, I am interested....
