There was an American man named Larry Walters who had a childhood dream that never left him: he wanted to fly. Not pilot-school flying. Not airplanes. Just simple, homemade, personal flight into the sky. So one day, he decided to make it happen. 🪑 The wild setup He built an improvised flying machine: a normal garden chair tied to dozens of helium weather balloons. The plan was simple in his head:float up for a short ride, enjoy the view, then come back down safely. To control the descent, he brought a pellet gun / air-powered gun, planning to slowly shoot and pop the balloons one by one whenever he wanted to lower altitude. What could go wrong? 🎈 The unexpected launch As soon as he cut the rope, the chair didn’t gently float. It rocketed upward. Fast. He climbed higher and higher until he reached roughly 4,500–5,000 meters (15,000–16,000 feet), drifting into controlled airspace among real aircraft. A man on a lawn chair, floating through the sky with snacks, a radio… and a very questionable plan. 😱 The turning point At some point, reality kicked in. He tried to control the descent by using the air gun to shoot and pop balloons, just like planned. But then something went wrong. The gun slipped from his hands and fell away, leaving him with no proper way to control altitude. Now he wasn’t “managing the flight” anymore. He was just… along for the ride. 🪂 The landing After drifting for a long and chaotic journey, he eventually managed to descend safely and land without serious injury. No crash. No disaster. Just one of the most unbelievable homemade flights ever recorded. 🧠 The takeaway A dream, a chair, and a sky full of balloons.
