I heard this crazy story today about Carlos the Jackal.
For those that don't know he was like the Osama Bin Laden of the 1970s and 80s.
He was dangerous and most notable, elusive.
I mean, his group kidnapped all of the heads of OPEC oil ministries, held them for ransom and got paid in the millions of dollars.
He evaded capture for 21 years.
Until one day a highly decorated war hero and CIA spy by the name of Billy Waugh saw Carlos, in all places, a vegetable stand in Khartoum, Sudan.
He recognized him immediately and took it to his superiors who called bullshit. The story was so outlandish, you couldn't help but call BS.
They told him he needed photos. He needed to provide proof of life.
That's when Billy came up with the first phase of his plan. He would go back to that vegetable stand every day until he saw him again.
But he wasn't just going to take pictures, he knew that would scare the guy off and he would likely never see him again.
And after a couple of months of surveillance, as luck would have it, Carlos appeared again.
That's when the plan was sprung.
Billy paid two guys to start a fight.
When the fight started, anyone close by encircled the two combatants to watch.
Carlos was one of the spectators and that's when Billy was able to get the shots he needed.
A couple more months of following Carlos and phase two of the plan went into play.
They broke into his house and added shredded glass to his toothpaste so that when Carlos brushed his teeth, his gums would bleed leading him to think he needed to go to the dentist.
Prior to this, the CIA got to the dentist and had him cooperate.
When Carlos visited the dentist to get the work done, he was sedated and fell asleep immediately.
He woke up a couple of hours later in a French transport on his way to face criminal charges which included at least 16 counts of murder.
Now, I tell you that story for two reasons.
First, because it's a damn cool story.
Second, because there's something about Billy Waugh's approach that most Realtors could learn from.
He didn't confuse patience with doing nothing.
He had a plan.
He executed the plan.
And when things didn't happen immediately, he didn't throw the plan away and start chasing something new.
He kept showing up.
Sound familiar?
I talk to Realtors every day who are frustrated that AI hasn't transformed their businesses.
They've watched the webinars, downloaded the prompts and played around with Claude or ChatGPT.
But when the results aren't immediate, they move on to the next shiny object.
Here's what I've found out the hard way:
Patience without action is just waiting. Action without patience is just frustration.
You need both.
And more importantly, you need a process that shows you the work you're putting in is actually moving you forward.
That's why I created my AI Startup Guide.
It starts with one of the most important things you can do when using AI: teaching it who you are, how you communicate and how your business operates.
Inside is a prompt that helps you build your custom instructions so you're no longer starting from scratch every time you open ChatGPT or Claude.
