Last night I preached on Abraham and the Promise.
We have this picture of Abraham walking up the Mountain with Issac carry the wood he would later be sacrificed on.
Its such a prophetic picture and encouragement for us today.
Genesis 22:3-5 "So Abraham rose up early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him and Isaac his son; and he split the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place that God had told him. 4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from a distance. 5 Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there and worship and then return to you.”
First of all we see Abraham did not question God... God spoke what seemed like a contradiction... kill your only son.. the one I promised you would bring forward as many descendants as the sand of the sea.
Second we see people can only go so far with you on your Journey of Faith. It got to a point where it was only Father and Son... Thats where we must understand... you cant take everyone with you where you are going. There are some assignments where its just you and Jesus.
Abraham, a foreshadow of the Father and Issac, foreshadowing Jesus carrying His cross. We know that this was the same Mountain Range that would later be called Calvery.
Can you imagine... As Abraham is walking up this mountain at 100 years old... He's still believing God's promises. He must be heartbroken, worried, afraid... but as he's walking in silence he's trusting God. He's litterally walking by faith. Believing God... EVEN WHEN IT LOOKS HOPELESS.
Now imagine Issac's perspective. He's carrying this wood on his back and he's already asked his father where is the sacrifice. He's no gullible 8 year old... Scholars believe Issac was between 20 and 37 years old. Josephus estimated he was 25 at this time. He's walking up this mountain... not understanding what's going on and even as Abraham starts to strap him down and put him on the wood...
Issac is trusting the process. He's either trusting his Father or Trusting in God... but for him not to be fighting for his life and wrestling his elderly father... at his prime... He had to have His trust in something greater than His physical situation and circumstance.
Lastly, we see Abraham say... we are going up to the Mountain to Worship. This is the first time the word "Worship" is used in the Bible. The Law of First Mention says, If you want to understand what a word means in the Bible, look at the context its used in the first time we find it.
Understand, "Worship" is not singing. Worship is Sacrifice.
Are you willing to live as a living Sacrifice... even when you feel like your life is crumbling? When you feel like you're loosing Control. Will you Trust God? That is Worship and that is Faith.
