When I’m coaching creators, these are the changes I find myself recommending most. They may seem small, but they can be the difference between someone scrolling past and sticking around to hear what you have to say.
1. 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 1–2 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐬.
Pair a visual hook with text on screen. Movement, an expression, or an interesting product shot catches the eye. Your text gives someone a reason to keep watching. Make them work together.
2. 𝐂𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞.
The pause before you start talking. Long gaps between sentences. Reaching to stop recording. Trim those out so the video keeps moving.
3. 𝐏𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐮𝐩 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞.
I often tell creators to talk a little faster than they normally would. If that feels unnatural, record comfortably and finish editing the whole video first. Then try speeding it up to 1.1x, or at most 1.2x. Listen back to make sure you still sound natural and every word is clear.
4. 𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐲 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬.
In my experience, easy-to-read captions work well. My go-to is white text with a black outline. Too many colors, bouncing words, and constant animations can distract from you and the product.
Create your next video with these four things in mind. 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐚 𝐛𝐢𝐠 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞.
Which one of these are you trying first?
