I'm trying to think about what makes someone truly ready to be a manager.
You need to master your life & work spaces in order to be a great person and consequently also become a great manager.
To become giga you need to
1) Master your life areas
2) Build a board that keeps you on track and motivated
3) Each step towards future you, builds you.
I'm designing this to to speedrun you -- a professional into one thats worthy, capable, and armed with the best judgement their future team will adopt and use.
First you become self-led. Your life improves, you build habits. If you can't lead yourself, how can you lead a business.
This is difficult. Some people go through their entire life unable to master even a small part of themselves. The Quest board makes this easier -- its just a way to keep me motivated to keep looking at what I need to keep at and how its going.
Its making sure you can control the resources that give you the quality of life you want. Thats measuring your money, time, relationships, health, mind, and making sure you maintain what you have and grow what you need.
This sounds autistic as hell to the undisciplined dopamine monkeys we vet out -- tracking your finances, tracking your weight or strength in the gym, journaling and reflecting, making the most of the limited time we have on earth, abstaining from the drugs and vices of choice... but its in this discipline (the act of saying no to the things we want to do in service of the things we need to do) that we grow.
To do this, I have 5 question self-audit that I have been using over the past year. I've shared this with my girlfriend, with my family, and some close confidants that are struggling with addictions.
It asks for things like "score 1-5 how well you manage your time", "are you in control of your time or does it control you" etc. And its in this we can have a health score out of 100%.
We look at each major area in life.
When this number and audit goes up, you're either able to change your life for the better, and thus have the skills of continual improvement.
THEN, you can run the GRAFTS exercises and set that master goal to how can I reach a 10/10 in each area... what needs to be true in order to be a 10/10 (or even get you closer to a 10/10).
For me, for the past few years, that was literally "run some sort of habit of habits to not just do the work but make sure I'm doing the right work to hit my goals sooner"
But for you I am trying to make it easy and available.
These are the same skills a business needs.
To go deeper... to become a manager is to build out the Wealth/Money Quest. This is in building the same thing, but to define productivity and value creation, how to align it to your income. Which is the most desired way to scale ones quality of life.
So I invite you -- apply the QUEST board yourself with a mission to maximize your quality of life in all areas as well as for your loved ones, friends, or whomever wants to go on this journey.
Run it as a once-a-week meet, with yourself, or with a friend or partner as I do.
Update your own whiteboard -- I have a laminated paper that I pinned on my wall, that I update with a marker. I see it daily, walk past it and go "fuck I stayed up way too late, and the graph looks bad now, I need to fix it" and keep going.
Running this doesn't need to take ages.
You start by setting one quest per major life area.
It can be how you manage your health, or your household, or your relationships, and to reflect and answer with your own honest heart where you're at and what are the things you know you ought to do.
These 5 resources of life all funnel into the other. So when you improve one, you see everything else in your life improve... and if you fail to manage they start to fall down.
The Quest board.... your quest board will help you get these on track.
Join me.
Start by using the pic and just track where you're at. Its OK to be 1/10 (a fate just above death). But at least you know where you're at.
Then design your own quests... Or even just stick with one.
Start tracking it. Build the habits that get you there.
And run the god damned 6 quest pulses -- even if you're writing and talking to yourself.
This is what reflection looks like, and you can't improve yourself if you can't SEE yourself.
And I absolutely promise you, as soon as you start to see the line you build start to go up--each dot is a vote of confidence in future you's identity, that THAT PERSON YOU WANT TO BECOME --IS WHAT SELF ACTUALIZATION MEANS. YOU ARE BECOMING THE YOU THAT YOU NEED TO BE.
