In this chapter, we’ll explore the evolution of phlebotomy, from its historical roots to modern practices. We’ll cover essential certifications, professionalism, patient rights, and HIPAA confidentiality. Plus, we’ll dive into effective communication in healthcare, quality assurance, legal considerations, and risk management.

This module covers all responsibilities a phlebotomy technician must complete before performing a blood draw. Students will learn how to correctly identify a patient, obtain the proper type of consent, confirm test requirements, review requisition forms, assess patient risks, explain procedures, position the patient safely, and prepare for both blood and non-blood specimen collection. This section teaches both exam-tested knowledge and real-world application in clinical and outpatient settings.

This module teaches the full process of routine venipuncture according to CLSI standards and exam expectations. Students will learn equipment selection, tourniquet use, vein assessment, skin antisepsis, order of draw, tube handling, safety steps during and after collection, and how to respond to complications. This content prepares students for the highest-weighted section of the exam and for safe, correct practice in clinical and mobile settings.

This module covers procedures that go beyond routine venipuncture, including blood cultures, peripheral smears, neonatal heel screenings (PKU), glucose tolerance testing, and other specialized collections. Students will learn the correct preparation, antisepsis requirements, order of draw differences, and handling rules that prevent contamination and specimen rejection.

This module focuses on how phlebotomy technicians process, handle, and document specimens after collection. Students will learn centrifugation, aliquoting, and specimen storage, while ensuring temperature, light, and timing requirements are maintained. Lessons also cover chain of custody, lab communication, reporting critical values, and distributing results according to exam standards.

This module teaches the structure and function of the human body and how each system connects to phlebotomy. Students learn about the circulatory system, blood components, blood groups, hemostasis, veins, the lymphatic system, and body tissues. This foundation helps students understand why certain steps in blood collection are required for safe and accurate results.

This module explains the medical language used in phlebotomy. Students learn roots, prefixes, and suffixes that help them decode medical words. Key phlebotomy terms, lab test abbreviations, tube and specimen terms, and common clinical instructions are covered. By understanding medical terminology, students can read orders correctly, prevent mistakes, and communicate clearly with healthcare staff.

This module covers the professional roles, responsibilities, and ethical standards expected of a phlebotomy technician. Students learn about patient care, aseptic technique, safety laws, documentation, communication skills, cultural sensitivity, professionalism, and the Code of Ethics. This module teaches the behaviors and decisions that protect patients and ensure safe, high-quality care.

This section gives you all the worksheets and final exams you need to study with confidence. Each worksheet helps you practice the skills and knowledge required for the NHA exam. The two final exams let you test yourself the same way you will be tested on exam day. Use these tools to check your understanding, build confidence, and track your progress as you prepare.
