Not so long ago, Sundays were a day of rest and contemplation for your beliefs. Today, I invite you to take time for rest and restoration. 🌿 A few simple, evidence-based facts: • Rest gives the body time to repair. During sleep and periods of physical rest, tissues repair, immune activity is regulated, and energy stores are replenished. • The nervous system gets a chance to downshift. Rest reduces the constant demand for alertness and can support the shift towards the parasympathetic, restorative state. • The brain processes and consolidates information during sleep. This supports memory, learning, emotional processing and clearer thinking. • Rest helps regulate stress hormones. Adequate sleep and recovery are associated with healthier regulation of cortisol and other systems involved in the stress response. • Immune function benefits from sufficient sleep. Sleep supports communication between immune cells and helps the body mount an appropriate immune response. • Muscles and connective tissues recover during rest. Recovery is particularly important after exercise, illness or periods of sustained physical demand. • Rest isn’t the opposite of productivity. Recovery is part of the process that allows attention, creativity, decision-making and physical performance to function well. And perhaps the loveliest bit: you don’t have to be asleep for every form of rest to be useful. Quiet time, lying down, gentle breathing, being in nature, meditation and simply reducing stimulation can all provide periods of recovery, even though they don’t replace the restorative functions of sleep. 🌿💗 What will you do today for your body, mind or spirit?
