Where it all starts. Getting it wrong here could make every session you open be more wasteful than it needs to be.
Think about a textbook. They all have a table of contents and an index. Why is that? Couldn’t they just drop all the information in front of you at once with no chapters or headers? You would have to read most of the textbook every time you try to find one piece of info.
The table of contents and index are a map. A directory where you go to find what you need and skip the rest. This saves you time and thinking. A good CLAUDE.md should act the same way.
Point the agent at the destination. And let the destination provide the context.
