There was confusion, compromise, and spiritual drought. Elijah stood alone against 450 prophets of Baal and called the nation to make a choice: “If the Lord be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him.” Both sides prepared their sacrifices and laid them on wood, but they put no fire. The prophets of Baal cried out, danced, and cut themselves from morning until noon, but there was no voice, no answer, and no fire. When it was Elijah’s turn, he did something even more remarkable: he had them pour twelve barrels of water over the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, and the ground, filling the trench with water. He was making it clear that when the answer came, it could never be explained by human effort, coincidence, or natural means. Then Elijah prayed a simple, humble prayer: “Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word. Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the Lord God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.”
