“for wisdom will come into your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul; discretion will watch over you, understanding will guard you, delivering you from the way of evil… So you will walk in the way of the good and keep to the paths of the righteous.”
Proverbs 2:10-12, 20 ESV
Welcome back, friend.
In this proverb a marriage related truth can be found: avoiding infidelity isn’t about avoiding people—it’s about staying rooted in the wisdom that keeps us centered and faithful.
The Enduring Word commentary paints such a beautiful picture of this living, breathing wisdom, and how it shapes both heart and habit.
1.Wisdom is a treasured pursuit—not passive or accidental
We’re reminded that wisdom isn’t acquired by chance. Solomon urges us to receive, treasure, incline our ears, apply our hearts, cry out, lift our voices, seek and search as diligently as mining for silver or hidden treasure. This pursuit is intentional, earnest, even strenuous.
** Invitation for you:**
When you feel tempted, pause and ask, “Am I seeking His wisdom as passionately as I might chase unmet desires elsewhere?”
2.God gives wisdom—and guards us
Proverbs makes it clear: wisdom comes from God’s mouth; He stores up sound wisdom for the upright. He is our shield and guard as we walk in righteousness. This isn’t a distant promise—it’s a present reality when we walk uprightly.
** Reflect with me:**
Let the truth settle in your heart: God isn’t just our judge; He’s our protector. His wisdom isn’t harsh—it watches over and preserves.
3.Wisdom brings joy and steadiness
When wisdom enters the heart and knowledge soothes the soul, discretion preserves and understanding guards—wisdom becomes both joyous and surefooted.
** Contemplation:**
In moments of temptation—whether emotional drift or flirtation—ask God to fill your heart with the peace and joy of His wisdom, not the fleeting excitement of what leads away from covenant faithfulness.
4. Wisdom rescues us from seductive temptation
Wisdom doesn’t just offer protection—it rescues. It delivers us from evil paths, perverse words, and the seduction of those who promise fulfillment outside covenant. The “immoral woman”—a symbolic stand-in for unfaithful temptation—is not glamorous; her/his house leads to death, not life .
** Practical take-away:**
Next time your heart flutters toward what’s off-limits—whether emotional intimacy with another, secret conversations, or wandering thoughts—pray: “God, deliver me from paths that lead to brokenness. Let me walk in goodness.”
Short, Prayerful Takeaways:
- Seek wisdom like treasure. Ask: Am I pursuing God’s truth with the same hunger as the world chases romance, recognition, or gold?
- Cling to God as your shield. Don’t walk this journey alone—invite the Lord to guard your steps, every day.
- Find joy in His wisdom. Ask for His Word to delight your soul more than outside attractions ever could.
- Walk in the way of life. Resist temptation by choosing the faithful path—steadily, moment by moment.
How to live it out: It is fascinating, that Solomon, even though he was the wisest man to ever live and collected the entire book of Proverbs and wrote a third of it, ended his life and sin and foolishness. But we have something that Solomon did not have, we have the power of the Holy Spirit within us. We have every capability to live out wisdom and God’s truth with the power of the Holy Spirit if we partner with him.. So make sure that you are in relationship with God and you are walking every day with the power of the Holy Spirit so that you do not fall into temptation or sin. Your marriage could very well depend on it.
Prayer to Close:
“Father, I treasure Your wisdom. Guard my heart with Your love and discernment. Deliver me from temptations that threaten my covenant. Fill my soul with joy in You alone. Guide my footsteps in righteousness. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
You’re not alone, friend. Wisdom isn’t a checkbox—it’s a heart posture held close to the Lord. I’m praying for you, always.
