Replit Free Mode just dropped!!
This went live this morning, so if you're reading this today you're genuinely early.
What actually happened
Replit shipped Free Mode today, announced jointly with OpenAI. It runs on GPT-5.6 Luna — the cheapest model in OpenAI's 5.6 family — and it's now the default mode when you open Agent.
The reason it exists: OpenAI cut Luna's price by around 80% on July 30. That's the whole story. Replit didn't get generous, the floor dropped.
Reality check on the name, because people are already confused:
  • It is not a free plan. Starter gets Free Mode inside the limits Starter already had.
  • Core ($20/mo) and Pro ($100/mo) get a Free Mode allowance that refreshes every ~5 hours, with a weekly cap on top. Pro's weekly cap is bigger.
  • "Free" means doesn't burn your credits. Not costs nothing.
Also, the modes got renamed and this trips people up:
Old name New name What it is Lite Free No-cost everyday agent work, always on Auto Economy Power Paid mid-tier, same price as Economy was Power Max Paid top-tier, frontier models
Your old settings carried over under the new names.
Why this one matters more than a normal pricing update
I've been saying the same thing for months: you don't need a frontier model to rename a button. Cheap model for cheap tasks, expensive model for the hard 10%.
Replit just took that idea and made it the default setting for everyone. The frontier model is now the exception you opt into, not the thing running by accident while you ask it what a useState hook is.
That's the shift. Not "free." The default flipped.
The actual tips
1. Set the mode before you type, not after. Mode selector sits under the prompt box. ⌘+Shift+I (Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows) cycles Free → Power → Max without leaving the input. Most wasted credits happen because someone starts typing in whatever mode was left open.
2. One step per prompt. Always. Free Mode falls over when you dump "build me a full CRM with auth and Stripe" into it. It's strong when you give it one screen, one feature, one interaction at a time. Build the thing that proves the idea works, then add to it.
3. Tell it what to KEEP, not just what to change. This is the single biggest allowance saver. "Make the header sticky" gets you a redesign you didn't ask for. "Make the header sticky, leave the nav layout and colors exactly as they are" gets you a header. Every unwanted rewrite is a wasted turn plus the turn you spend undoing it.
4. Plan in Free Mode, then decide. Ask it to lay out the approach before it builds anything. Planning is cheap, rebuilding is not. If the plan looks wrong, you found that out for zero credits.
5. When it asks to escalate, approve it once — then check. If a request genuinely needs a paid mode, Agent tells you first and waits. You can approve that single request, and it drops back to Free Mode after. Nothing bills without your confirmation. So say yes to the hard task, then look at your next prompt and ask whether it also needs Max, or whether you're just riding momentum.
6. Stay in one conversation. Context is free. Re-explaining your app to a fresh thread is not. Continuing in the same conversation means it already knows your decisions and your existing code.
7. Work around the 5-hour reset. Settings → Usage shows what's left and when it refreshes. If you know your allowance resets at 3pm, don't start the ambitious build at 2:45. Batch the small stuff into the tail end of a window and start big things fresh.
8. Know the walls before you hit them:
  • Free Mode is always Auto — you can't hand-pick a model. Want a specific model? That's Power or Max.
  • Routines don't run in Free Mode.
  • No video generation. Paid capability.
  • Full apps? Yes. Editing existing projects? Yes. That part isn't limited.
(Replit's own docs note allowance details may still get adjusted around launch, so check Settings → Usage rather than trusting a number you read on the internet — including mine.)
Challenge for the week
Build one thing start to finish in Free Mode only. No escalations. Doesn't matter how small — a tracker, a landing page, a dumb tool for one specific annoyance in your life.
Post in the community:
  1. The published link
  2. Where Free Mode broke or got dumb
  3. Whether you actually needed to escalate, or just wanted to
That third one is the interesting data. My guess is most of us reach for the expensive model way earlier than the task needs, and this is a clean way to find out.
One more thing
Replit's doing a livestream Friday 9am PT with the people who built Free Mode and Conversations, plus an early look at Routines. Worth catching if you want the details straight from the team instead of secondhand.
Question for you all: does this change which tool you'd start a build in, or is it not enough to move you? I'm curious how many of you were paying for credits you were burning on stuff Luna could've handled.
