Putting Down The Stones
"He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her." (John 8:7)
I've been thinking about the people I've wrongly judged.
It's easy to see someone's worst moment and decide that's who they are. It's harder to remember that I've had worst moments too, and that grace found me anyway.
When the accusers brought a woman before Jesus, he didn't excuse the sin and he didn't join the stone-throwing. He simply asked them to look inward. One by one, they walked away.
Then he looked at her and said, "Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more."
Mercy first. Change second.
Here's what I'm learning: judgment is heavy. It keeps us braced, keeping score, always needing to be a little above someone else. Love lets us set all of that down.
The weight lifts when we come from a place of love.
Who do you need to extend mercy to today? Or maybe, who do you need to apologize to?
