He Wrote the World's Most Famous River Song
and Never Saw It [SUWANNEE] Stephen Foster wrote "Way Down Upon the Suwannee River" in 1851. He came into his brother's office in Pittsburgh and asked, "What's a good name of two syllables for a Southern river?" They opened an atlas. His finger landed on the Suwannee. Foster never saw the river. Never visited Florida. The song made the Suwannee one of the most famous rivers in the world anyway.
