Greetings I trust that all is well with you guys & the movement! Much appreciation for your great contributions to the indie community. Nuff respect!! With that said I must express my disappointment with your most recent YouTube audio post. Building A Spotify Payout Strategy For Indie Artists In 2023.
I think it’s your most recent because I just finished listening to it & it says that it was uploaded only hours ago.
Here’s why I’m disappointed. I feel like the dialogue between you & Kohrey was super one sided, in the favor of indie artists pretty much needing the streaming platforms, pretty much Spotify.
I’m not saying that the intention of the dialogue was to be one sided I’m simply expressing my opinion in regards how it sounded to me. It sounded as if you guys were trying to convince indie artists to abandon the idea of building their own communities & convincing fans to abandon supporting indie artists who have their own communities as well, based on the idea of convenience.
At this present moment a lot of indie artists are doing well from their bandzoogle websites & their band camps etc. And these artists worked really hard to accomplish this!
You guys have very loud voices & A LOT of people trust your word & will follow your lead. Some will follow blindly. That’s how great of an influence you have become.
The bottom line is platforms are robbing artists left & right & artists are tired of it. If you agree with streaming & think the idea of using streaming platforms work then that’s fine. But please be mindful of how you deliver your messages to where it doesn’t sound anti something else.
Your dialogue on this topic may have caused an artist to lose a subscription or may have changed the mind of a potential fan of becoming a fan of an artist who has their own community, because of the convenience of listening to music on Spotify.
ALL BUSINESSES need those hardcore die hard supporters to keep the lights on. And this strategy is needed to be taught within music.
Artists go on the streaming platforms to gain the attention but artists also have the right to earn a living from their art, which is the issue.
Music is a product like anything else. And it’s disingenuous to use convenience as an excuse for listeners to flock to Spotify.
Vacation is a product. Hotel is a product. TV shows are a product. Like so many other products. Nobody complains that they have to leave Netflix to go on a travel site to book a vacation. Nobody complains that they have to leave instagram for a moment because they need to purchase something from Amazon.
And if people do complain they still make the effort because the PRODUCT has VALUE. And when a product has value people will make the effort to get access to it regardless of the “inconvenience.”
Hence why the idea of setting up a vacation can be such a hassle at times but persons still do it because of the value it brings.
Many persons would stand in line for hours to get a new play station or a pair of Jordans, or to see their favorite artist perform.
Don’t cheapen the indie artists & their work just because fans may have to click the keyboard a few more times than usual to experience their art. Let’s find ways to assist all creators.
Whichever path a creator takes, in this case an indie artist, let’s support the path they choose to take & give them the pros & cons of their path & raise ideas how that artist can maximize their path to both the benefit of the artist & the consumer.
The key to indie artists having their own platforms are the perks! Reggae Dancehall artist Sean Paul is on Spotify. But he’s also on instagram AND X(Twitter). Die hard fans of Sean Paul don’t make a fuss that his entire existence isn’t on Spotify.
Lazy fans as Kohrey puts it don’t complain about this issue?
And where is the data that supports the impact of a lazy fan?! Because I don’t think a diehard fan and a lazy fan are in the same category.
Lazy fans are window shoppers. They in the mall but they ain’t buying nothing. And that isn’t the demographic indie artists are going after anyway.
To my knowledge artists can’t go live on Spotify. Merchandise cannot be purchased on Spotify. Quick tweets cannot be done on Spotify. Posting reels & so forth cannot be done on Spotify or any streaming platform. Not as far as I know.
And with that said consumers of musicians who are on Spotify don’t make a fuss about having to experience that same artist on instagram or tiktok & so forth. So why is the indie artist getting shit on if they remove Spotify out of the equation?’
Musicians whether major or indie are allllll over the place these days. And we’re literally social media hopping. We’re on YouTube then TikTok then Instagram then facebook then Twitter etc.
It’s the perks the ADDITION to the music that gets fans to become die hard & follow you wherever you go!
There are professional people in the industry who tell the masses str8 up that a musician & their music career ain’t going nowhere unless a major label is involved. Does that mean we should abandon the idea of NO LABELS NECESSARY?! Absolutely not!
But the way you guys sounded in that audio, you guys sounded like the big dogs see the impact you’re having & got at you fast & bought you out to change your tone so that the favor will still be in the favor of the machine. I’m not saying that’s what it is but it’s how you guys sounded fam.
Lastly I wish to say my post is lengthy off of the strength of care & passion but not aggression!
And all of what I said is just my opinion based on my observation. I wish you guys continued success & I appreciate all of what you have done.
With that said I leave with this!
“There ain’t no one spiritual path to experience God, there ain’t no one prayer to talk to God & there ain’t no one way to experience great art & great music!”

Yeah I’m branding that quote! It’ll be on T-Shirts shortly!!
